Caring for the environment

We recognise that we have a very important role to play in protecting and enhancing our local environment.

CityNorth Hotel has created an ESG (Environmental and Social Governance) team and some ambitious goals that have been put in place to improve our working environment and long-term sustainability of the hotel within our local biosphere. The hotel is working towards lowering their operating carbon footprint year on year and the team are actively working towards this goal.

Our hotel is registered with Fáilte Ireland and is participating in their Climate Action program. With a target of 45% reduction in CO2 emmissions by the end of 2030, our team are focused on best practice in delivery of our business with respect to the SDGs and our local environment.

Since we began the program, we have achieved a reduction in our cabon footprint of 68CO2-e.  We now have an ambitious annual goal of a further 6.54% reduction which we will achieve by focusing on monthly actions with the assistance of our climate advisors.

CityNorth Hotel is a member of The Sustainable Tourism Network of Ireland and have worked closely with this network providing staff training in sustainable tourism and working towards certification.

Reducing our Carbon Footprint

All bulbs have been replaced with energy-efficient LED bulbs and fittings which have reduced energy output in our lighting system by 60%. Censored lighting has been fitted in common areas to manage energy efficiency.

A sensory software management system has been put in place to manage energy wastage in our bedrooms.  Over 90% of energy wastage in hotels occurs in guest bedrooms.  This system allows us to optimise energy consumption by turning off lighting and adjusting climate control systems when guests are not in rooms for long periods of time, or when rooms are unoccupied.

We have electric car charging stations available on our campus (Located in Circle K Forecourts).

In 2024 under the Fáilte Ireland Climate Action program we have recorded a reduction in energy consumption of 10.47%(baseline 2019)

Our goal in 2025 is to achieve a further 7.07% annual reduction in electricity consumption and 5.95% annual reduction in natural gas consumption.  Check back here in January, we hope to celebrate achieving these goals!

Elimination of Single Use Plastics

  • We have replaced any cosmetic products containing microbeads and have phased out the use of single use plastic consumables
  • Plastic straws have been replaced with paper straws
  • All take away food packaging is resusable and recyclable and no plastic is used.
  • A water filtration system has been installed and we have entirely eliminated the use of plastic water bottles.
  • Every effort is made throughout our operations to reduce or eliminate the use of plastics

Water Sustainability

All water used by CityNorth Hotel originates in two onsite wells. Signage in our rooms encourages guests to preserve water.

Waste Management

The Green Team has recently audited waste management processes at CityNorth Hotel.  Policies are in place for segregated waste management with zero landfill thanks to our waste management partners Panda Waste.  Read their sustainability processes here, Sustainability at Home | Our Commitment & Tips

Ongoing training with staff, along with the co-operation of our suppliers and customers, will help us to reach our target of reducing general waste to 20% of our overall waste by the end of 2026.

Sustainable Food Practices

Our chefs have a policy in place to use locally sourced, sustainable products where possible.  Food waste is managed with targets in place for always reducing food waste. We have installed the Positive Carbon Platform in our kitchens which helps us to track waste by food period.  In April 2025 we have achieved a 183kg reduction in our food waste and have a target of an additional 200kg reduction per month by the end of 2025.

Our remaining food waste is converted to renewable fuel by our food waste partners Frylite. They remove our food waste and convert it to biofuel and biofertiliser. For more details see Food Waste Collection Across Ireland & NI | Frylite Our team is working to eliminate food waste and achieve a zero food waste operation as part of our overall waste management goals.
